Plainsight

Privacy policy

Effective October 26, 2026 · Plainsight for iPhone, made by Tom Fouxman ("we")

Short version: your financial data stays on your iPhone. Plainsight sends something only if you turn it on: a beta report you choose to send, or anonymous usage stats.

What the app does with your information

Plainsight reads the statement files you choose to import (for example, a CSV file downloaded from your card issuer) and stores the transactions, categories, budgets and settings it creates on your device. All analysis, including subscription detection and categorizing, happens on your device.

What stays on your iPhone

Your statements, transactions, balances, budgets, categories and settings. We never receive them. Plainsight has no account and no sign-up. There is no advertising and no third-party tracking, and we never sell or share your information.

What can leave your iPhone, only if you choose

Beta reports (beta testers only)When you send a report or idea from a beta version, Plainsight sends what you wrote, the screen you were on, the app version and iPhone model, a rounded count of your accounts and transactions, and a screenshot of the screen with amounts and names greyed out on your iPhone before it's sent. You see exactly what will be sent first, and you can copy the report instead of sending it. Reports go through our own server to a private GitHub repository, where they're stored as issues together with the name on your beta invite. Screenshots are deleted after 30 days.

Anonymous usage stats (off until you say yes)If you turn on Share usage data, Plainsight sends which screens you use and where things go wrong, through TelemetryDeck, using a random ID that isn't linked to you. It never sends amounts, balances, merchants, accounts, your bank, anything you type, or your files. You can turn it off at any time in Settings, which also lists everything that was sent.

Bank access

Plainsight never connects to your bank and never asks for your banking username or password.

Apple services

Some optional features use Apple's built-in iOS services on your device: Face ID to lock the app, local notifications for reminders, and widgets. Your device backups (for example, iCloud Backup, if you have turned it on) are governed by Apple's privacy policy.

Links that open your browser

Some buttons, such as a subscription's cancel link or your bank's statement download page, open a web page in your browser. If Plainsight doesn't know a service's cancel page, it opens a DuckDuckGo search for that merchant's name. Those websites have their own privacy policies; Plainsight sends nothing else to them.

Deleting your data

You can remove imported statements in the app, or erase everything in Settings › Your data. Deleting the app removes all of its data from your device. To have a beta report you sent deleted, email [email protected].

Children

Plainsight is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.

Changes

If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the effective date above. If the app ever starts sending anything new, we'll ask you first in the app.
